Gameplay: Exploration Without Handholding

At its core, Hell Is Us is a semi-open world action-adventure with a strong focus on melee combat and natural exploration.
Unlike many modern titles, the game abandons glowing waypoints and objective markers. Instead, players are encouraged to explore intuitively, making notes, observing landmarks, and uncovering secrets on their own.
Combat emphasizes precision and strategy, with players wielding ancient weapons to confront terrifying supernatural entities. These encounters reward patience and skill rather than button-mashing, creating an experience that feels both challenging and rewarding.
Story: War, Memory, and the Supernatural
Set in a country ravaged by civil war and an unknown calamity, the narrative blends political turmoil with psychological tension. Players step into the role of a man returning to his homeland, grappling with memory loss and unanswered questions about his family’s fate.
Supernatural creatures stalk the land, immune to conventional weapons. To survive, the protagonist must rely on ancient technology and the support of a drone companion.
Creative director Jonathan Jacques-Belletête explains the central theme:
“The central theme of Hell is Us is that human violence is a perpetual cycle fueled by human emotions and passions.”
This framing sets the stage for a story that examines human conflict alongside supernatural terror.
